A Versatile 1.4-mW 6-bits CMOS ADC for Pulse-Based UWB Communication Systems

چکیده
An Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) using the low duty-cycle nature of pulse-based Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) communications to reduce its power consumption is proposed. Implemented in CMOS 180 nm technology, it can capture a 5 ns window at 4 GS/seach 100 ns, which corresponds to the acquisition of one UWB pulse at the pulse repetition rate of 10 mega pulses per second (Mpps). By using time-interleaved Redundant Signed Digit (RSD) ADCs, the complete ADC occupies only 0.15 mm and consumes only 1.4 mW from a 1.8 V power supply. The ADC can be operated in two modes using the same core circuits (operational transconductance amplifier, comparators, etc.). The first mode is the standard RSD doubling mode, while the second mode allows improving the signal-to-noise ratio by adding coherently the transmitted pulses of one symbol. For example, for audio applications, a 300 kbps data rate and processing gain up to 15 dB can be achieved at a clock frequency of 10 MHz.

Low Power CMOS Re-programmable Pulse Generator for UWB Systems
In this paper we discuss the design of a CMOS based pulse generator for impulse-based UWB systems. The basic structure of our design involves a power amplifier with four control taps, which essentially decides the shape of the generated pulse. The design is versatile and may be used in a variety of UWB modulation schemes and systems. In addition, this design can also be incorporated into a mult...

The design of an N -comparator based asynchronous Successive Approximation Analog-to-Digital Converter (SAR ADC) is described (with N = 6) working at 20 MS/s and consuming only 5.6 mW for low power high speed applications like communication systems. Resetting the comparators in each conversion cycle is avoided (reducing power consumption compared to [1]) and only N latches are used overall (inc...

متن کاملHigh-Speed Data Conversion for Digital Ultra-Wideband Radio Receivers
Ultra wideband radio (UWB) is a new high-speed wireless technology that uses subnanosecond pulses to transmit information. Implementing an all-digital UWB receiver has numerous benefits ranging from low cost and ease of design to flexibility. Digitizing an RF signal near the antenna, however, introduces its own set of challenges and has traditionally been considered infeasible. A high-speed, hi...
